01 - PROBLEM

Families are stuck at home due to the coronavirus, but when the shelter-in-place orders lift, we will want to create new memories with shared travel experiences and go back to booking stays with Airbnb

Empower families and groups of friends who travel together a collaborative way to document, organize, and share their travel experiences and stays to the larger Airbnb community.
02 - SOLUTIONAirbnb Memories — a travel documentation app where users can collaborate with friends and family on creating Memories featuring their favourite moments from their trip. The app focuses on the usability for all ages.
Explore a variety of Memories

Browse through other people’s Memories and see what fun places your friends and families have been to.

Invite other users to collaborate on projects

Send an invitation to your travel buddies to collaborate on the same Memories project. The joint project library and labeled editor makes sharing photos and editing together a lot easier.

Create Memories with ease

Guided questions help you jot down your thoughts more easily. Location tags are generated automatically and photos are organized chronologically upon upload.

Share the Memories in different formats.

With the older users in mind, the app creates both a video and text format of the Memory. Having the video option, our grandparents can share the joy from our travels without having to read through long texts on a small screen.

Book featured Airbnb stays

Book the same Airbnbs that your friends and family stayed at. The app automatically connects back to the original Airbnb app.

03 - RESEARCH SYNTHESIS
After conducting interviews with 5 avid travellers and Airbnb users, I began affinity mapping. Then, I created two personas and journey map to synthesize the insights and pain points to help guide my design.

04 - USER FLOW & IDEATION
With all the pain points in mind, I sketched out possible features to increase ease for collaboration and increase usability. I went through iterations of information architecture and drafted alternative user flows and screen layouts.

05 - DESIGN & BRANDING
Staying true to the Airbnb branding, I used similar colours and fonts to the original app. However, I focused on adding more playfulness with fun graphics to inspire people’s creativity when using the app.

Different Logo. Same Focus.

I designed the Memories logo with the same method of thinking but incorporating different elements.

Font & Colours

The fonts and colour aligns with the original app. I incorporated more of the secondary colours to add more playfulness compared to the original app.

Illustrations

I added illustrations to, again, add more playfulness to the experience. This can help keep the user in a creative mindset when creating their Memories. This illustration is by Vijay Verma.

06 - FINAL PROTOTYPE

The final prototype combines all the features with feedback incorporated from the different rounds of user testing

07 - WHAT ELSE?

As a traveler who loves to document my trips, I know that there are a lot more features that can be added to this product. With the advancement of multimedia platforms, Airbnb Memories have a lot more possibilities in offering more customization for content creation.

01 — I would visualize what the Memories video would look like. This was a feature that helps with the usability for older generation, but there could be a lot more customization on the editing page that allows users to create fun and compelling videos.

02 — There could be more of a focus on the social aspect of the app where users can have more interactions with each other such as commenting on Memories or featuring their favourites on their profiles...etc.

03 — More diverse guided question to create more variety and help users create more interesting and fun content.

08 - LEARNINGS & TAKEAWAYS?
The Airbnb Creative Jam Designathon really pushed me outside of my comfort zone, especially with the 48 hour time restraints. I did not create something that I was particularly proud of at the time, yet, I'm glad I took the initiative to revisit this project.

By giving the project the amount of hours and thought it deserves, I was able to flesh out the design solution with proper research. This project gave me the opportunity to venture into different design possibilities and helped me understand the importance of the iteration process.
